What are item levels for

So, I was looking at my inventory and I saw that my power shard that I had bought was level 5, all of my training garments were level 1, and whatnot. But what is the difference. I mean, they still do the same stuff, right? And do the levels get higher somehow. I added a courage suffix to my garments but they didn't go up because all it does is adds some percent to all the stats and stuff because that's how it works.

You're monster has to be that level to use it.
Don't know if there is anything else to it.

That's not it, garr. They used to add +level to your monster which made it harder to level them up but people were just getting like 5k SRP and then removing the equips. I was kinda a noob when I designed the equip system.
