I didn't intend for this to be a long and complicated idea, but seems like it turned into one. My bad. tl;dr = random quests stuck in little resting points between towns? Y/N?
As it is, there have been a handful of times where I've left for work/hanging out with people/generally other things while in the middle of exploring, and had one, two, three ticks go by before I had time to sit down and get back to exploring. I only just got the homestone, but you don't really want to lose your progress, either. So, the idea is, stick in little spots where you can stop and rest along the way, without having to make up a bunch of lore for why there's 28 new towns all of a sudden.
Obviously other "people" are going to stop and rest along the way, too, so it'd make sense to have gathering points. Whether they're just little spots from which you can send your monsters to work (bounty hunting, maybe...?) or places to stick in additional pointless/randomized quests (hunt x of y mob, get mystical tree sap from 970,1020, etc.) it'd help smooth out the pace of exploring. Even better if it slows down people's progress because they don't feel like they need to rush to the next city as quickly as possible.
Actually, randomized quests would be cool. A hunting board kinda like the whole Marks thing in FF XII, some venerable chieftain, an experienced trainer, whatever, they can come from pretty much anywhere. Maybe just give SRP rewards, maybe give some kind of points that can be exchanged for rewards like the training points. Job board/bounty board/whatever name works best could give out hunter points or something, or possibly mercenaries/indigenous tribe's chief/trainer/whatever would give you loyalty points to their little faction that you can redeem at their little resting points for themed rewards. Mercenaries might have equipment with strength buffs, tribal guys might have agility, experienced trainer might give all around stuff, things like that.

But when that call never comes, it's time to face what you've become - there's no point doing all of this, unless you know you're having fun.
