I think the 5x5 Explore graphic screen is a little small. It makes me feel like I'm looking at the game through a window, instead of just looking at the game.
You're got some pretty sweet old-school GameBoy graphics going on, and I'd like to see more of the landscape while playing. I know you've got a vast world planned, by the looks of the map, and I think it'd be beneficial to expand the screen a bit.
I'm not saying make it full screen, that would be overkill, and take away from the excitement of stumbling upon a city - seeing it 20 paces off isn't necessary. But I think a 10x10 screen would be more than adequate, or at least emulate the size of a GameBoy screen or that of another handheld device. Whatever dimensions that may be.
Today I ran into an "Under Construction" area, and I thought that was fantastic. Unintentional humor maybe, but I loved it. The part I didn't love was when I walked too far into it, and then didn't have a way of judging how far I'd gone with just a 5x5 screen.
Also, if you stray from the stone paths, its possible to miss a town/city, as they're only 3x3.
You've got a big world planned! I hope you can make the best of it.
